My New Best Friend

Guayake (gwy-uh-kee) Yerba Mate (yer-bah mah-tay)!

I discovered this drink in the organic and health section of my local Kroger.  The cans of the sparkling yerba mate were on sale so I decided to buy a couple of cans and try it.  Wow!

This drink is filled with vitamins and minerals and is made from naturally caffeinated leaves of a holly tree in South America.  These leaves have been used for years to make teas.  This provides me with the perfect amount of energy to make it through the rest of the day.  I don’t get the jitters or crash that comes with drinking coffee, either.

The taste is different than anything else that I have tried and takes some getting used to.  But it wasn’t completely disgusting to where I could no longer drink it (like Kombucha).

This drink offers many heath benefits along with added energy:

1. It enhances Digestive Function

2. Makes you more alert

3. Supports weight loss (This is NOT a weight loss supplement!  Do not think that if you start drinking these, you will lose weight.  It has simply been shown in a few studies that it has helped some people lose excess weight.)

4. Freshens breath

5. Boosts your immune system

Although there is information on the web about this causing esophageal cancer, there have not been any definite studies to show this.  This is also only for the hot yerba mate products.  This type of cancer has also been seen in patients who consistently drink hot beverages (i.e. coffee).

So if you are looking for a boost in the afternoon, morning, or even at night, grab one of these and not coffee.

Simple Truth? More like Simple Lies.

When I go grocery shopping, I usually go to Kroger.  There is a new one fairly close to both my work and home.  I enjoy shopping there because the store is clean and even when the parking lot it full, the store doesn’t seem overly crowded.  I also like the Simple Truth and Simple Truth Organic products.  I think it’s great that I can buy natural and organic products at a lower price.

It turns out, at least one of these products is advertising lies.  I just came across a couple of articles about the Simple Truth chicken: these chickens are not raised humanely at all.  Although they are raised cage-free, they are forced to live their lives in a dark barn with up to 40,000 more chickens.  The living area is so cramped that most of them become stressed and peck at each other (sometimes to death).  This type of crapped living also causes bone malformation, cardiovascular problems, and ruptured tendons.  I won’t even go into what this company calls their “humane” way of killing them because it is too disturbing.

Because of this news, I am left wondering if the Simple Truth Organic products are truly organic. . .  I do know that I will no longer be purchasing this chicken.  I may just have to change grocery chains, as well.  Whole Foods is not too far down the road.

Pasty No More

Yes, Spring has finally sprung!  I cannot tell you how excited I am to see new blooms and feel warmer weather.  With Spring comes spending more time outdoors and less clothing.  If you are like me, you did not venture out much during the winter, and you kept your body fully clothed to stay warm.  This, unfortunately, leads to the skin tone of Casper the Friendly Ghost.

Because I am a mother of one now with a husband who works away from home, I am not going to have to time to relax in the sun and work on a golden tan.  Plus, who wants skin cancer?

Normally, I would just use a self-tanner like I have been using since college, but knowing what I know now about all the harmful chemicals contained in those bottles, I didn’t want to put that on my skin.  I did some poking about on the web in search of a natural self-tanner that would actually work.

Introducing Caribbean Solutions Beach Colours Self Tanner!

Caribbean Solutions Beach Colours

I read many different reviews for many different natural self-tanners and this one seemed to be the best.  I purchased it from Amazon for $11.89.

This stuff is really great!  There is no smell like many self-tanners have.  Although it takes a little longer to massage into the skin, a little goes a long way.  I saw instant results!  I usually shower and exfoliate and then put on the self-tanner and let it sink in over night. With other lotions, it would take two or three applications before I saw any type of result, but with this one, I woke up and was tan!

I would definitely recommend this product to you!  Have you found any other natural self-tanners that you like?
